In the picturesque rural regions of Cameroon, bright young minds are often plunged into darkness once the sun sets. Yet their thirst for learning shines with an unquenchable light. However, this quest for knowledge is hampered by a cruel reality: the lack of access to electricity. In these remote areas, children and young people are forced to put aside their schoolbooks after dark, limiting their educational potential and their future. FamilyCare, a community of dedicated volunteers, has made it its mission to change this reality. Our "HomeWork" project aims to provide portable, eco-friendly light sources to these young people at school, illuminating their educational pathways and opening doors previously unsuspected.
Study Night
In rural Cameroon, night does not necessarily mean rest and relaxation for young people. In fact, it's often the time when their real work begins. They aspire to complete their homework, revise their lessons, and deepen their understanding of the subjects they are passionate about. However, the absence of electricity plunges them into darkness, limiting them to archaic means of lighting such as storm lamps and candles. These solutions are far from ideal, endangering their eyesight and limiting their ability to study for short periods.
A glimmer of hope
FamilyCare's HomeWork project aims to bring a glimmer of hope into the lives of these young people. Our aim is simple but powerful: to provide every child and young person attending school in non-electrified areas with a portable, environmentally-friendly light source. In practical terms, this means that they will have access to a rechargeable lamp or illuminated sign with a battery life of at least 4 hours. With this light source, they will be able to read, revise and do their homework in the evening in complete safety.
Did you know?
In Cameroon, despite significant progress in electrification, more than half of school-age children live in areas without electricity. This hampers their education, forcing them to study in difficult and limited conditions. Statistics show that less than 30% of girls reach secondary school, and very few have the chance to follow quality vocational training. As a result, the rural exodus is becoming an increasingly strong temptation, depriving rural areas of their intellectual capital.
The impact of HomeWork
The "HomeWork" project has the potential to transform the lives of thousands of young Cameroonians. Here's how:
1. Education as the Key to Development : Being able to read and write is the key to accessing the modern world. By helping these young people to continue their studies in the evenings, we are offering them opportunities for the future and contributing to the emergence of tomorrow's development leaders.
2. Reducing school drop-out and rural exodus: By providing them with the means to succeed at school, we are helping to reduce school drop-out and rural exodus, thereby strengthening rural communities and stimulating local development.
3. Family empowerment: The impact of HomeWork extends to the families of these young people. They become role models for their younger brothers and sisters, encouraging education and autonomy.
4. Access to Training Opportunities: HomeWork opens the door to vocational training opportunities for these young people, enabling them to acquire skills and create their own jobs.
How does HomeWork work?
The success of HomeWork is based on a series of key steps:
1. Negotiating reduced prices: We work with companies selling rechargeable lamps at reduced prices. In exchange for our services or goods from our exchange, we negotiate advantageous rates to make these lamps affordable for families.
2. Collection of Direct Donations: Thanks to a campaign to collect donations directly from vendors, we enable donors to pay directly for the lamps for our beneficiaries. Every donation counts.
3. Solar Charging Stations: We plan to build free charging stations in non-electrified localities. The region's abundant solar energy will ensure that each lamp remains operational.
Join us in this Glimmer of Hope
The "HomeWork" project needs your help to succeed. Your support can make a huge difference to the lives of these young people and to the development of our country. Here's how you can get involved:
Make a Donation: Every gesture counts. Your donation will be used to buy lamps and distribute them to young people at school.
Sponsor a child: By sponsoring a child, you contribute to his or her ongoing education and empowerment. You can follow their progress and see the impact of your donation.
Become a HomeWork Ambassador: Share our project with your friends, family and colleagues. The more of us there are, the brighter our children's future will be.
Project HomeWork
Reading in the evening and doing homework is the minimum expected of a normal pupil. This is without realising that many children in Africa have no light after dark. FamilyCare's mission is to change this reality. The aim of our "HomeWork" project is to provide portable, environmentally-friendly light sources for these young schoolchildren, illuminating their educational pathways to open up all possible avenues for the future.
